Engineering Benchmarks for Planning: the Domains Used in the Deterministic Part of IPC-4
In a field of research about general reasoning mechanisms, it is essential to
have appropriate benchmarks. Ideally, the benchmarks should reflect possible
applications of the developed technology. In AI Planning, researchers more and
more tend to draw their testing examples from the benchmark collections used in
the International Planning Competition (IPC). In the organization of (the
deterministic part of) the fourth IPC, IPC-4, the authors therefore invested
significant effort to create a useful set of benchmarks. They come from five
different (potential) real-world applications of planning: airport ground
traffic control, oil derivative transportation in pipeline networks,
model-checking safety properties, power supply restoration, and UMTS call
setup. Adapting and preparing such an application for use as a benchmark in the
IPC involves, at the time, inevitable (often drastic) simplifications, as well
as careful choice between, and engineering of, domain encodings. For the first
time in the IPC, we used compilations to formulate complex domain features in
simple languages such as STRIPS, rather than just dropping the more interesting
problem constraints in the simpler language subsets. The article explains and
discusses the five application domains and their adaptation to form the PDDL
test suites used in IPC-4. We summarize known theoretical results on structural
properties of the domains, regarding their computational complexity and
provable properties of their topology under the h+ function (an idealized
version of the relaxed plan heuristic). We present new (empirical) results
illuminating properties such as the quality of the most wide-spread heuristic
functions (planning graph, serial planning graph, and relaxed plan), the growth
of propositional representations over instance size, and the number of actions
available to achieve each fact; we discuss these data in conjunction with the
best results achieved by the different kinds of planners participating in
IPC-4
Decision-Theoretic Planning with non-Markovian Rewards
A decision process in which rewards depend on history rather than merely on
the current state is called a decision process with non-Markovian rewards
(NMRDP). In decision-theoretic planning, where many desirable behaviours are
more naturally expressed as properties of execution sequences rather than as
properties of states, NMRDPs form a more natural model than the commonly
adopted fully Markovian decision process (MDP) model. While the more tractable
solution methods developed for MDPs do not directly apply in the presence of
non-Markovian rewards, a number of solution methods for NMRDPs have been
proposed in the literature. These all exploit a compact specification of the
non-Markovian reward function in temporal logic, to automatically translate the
NMRDP into an equivalent MDP which is solved using efficient MDP solution
methods. This paper presents NMRDPP (Non-Markovian Reward Decision Process
Planner), a software platform for the development and experimentation of
methods for decision-theoretic planning with non-Markovian rewards. The current
version of NMRDPP implements, under a single interface, a family of methods
based on existing as well as new approaches which we describe in detail. These
include dynamic programming, heuristic search, and structured methods. Using
NMRDPP, we compare the methods and identify certain problem features that
affect their performance. NMRDPPs treatment of non-Markovian rewards is
inspired by the treatment of domain-specific search control knowledge in the
TLPlan planner, which it incorporates as a special case. In the First
International Probabilistic Planning Competition, NMRDPP was able to compete
and perform well in both the domain-independent and hand-coded tracks, using
search control knowledge in the latter
Extending classical planning with state constraints: Heuristics and search for optimal planning
We present a principled way of extending a classical AI planning formalism with systems of state constraints, which relate - sometimes determine - the values of variables in each state traversed by the plan. This extension occupies an attractive middle ground between expressivity and complexity. It enables modelling a new range of problems, as well as formulating more efficient models of classical planning problems. An example of the former is planning-based control of networked physical systems - power networks, for example - in which a local, discrete control action can have global effects on continuous quantities, such as altering flows across the entire network. At the same time, our extension remains decidable as long as the satisfiability of sets of state constraints is decidable, including in the presence of numeric state variables, and we demonstrate that effective techniques for cost-optimal planning known in the classical setting - in particular, relaxation-based admissible heuristics - can be adapted to the extended formalism. In this paper, we apply our approach to constraints in the form of linear or non-linear equations over numeric state variables, but the approach is independent of the type of state constraints, as long as there exists a procedure that decides their consistency. A finite model of two-dimensional ideal hydrodynamics
A finite-dimensional su() Lie algebra equation is discussed that in the
infinite limit (giving the area preserving diffeomorphism group) tends to
the two-dimensional, inviscid vorticity equation on the torus. The equation is
numerically integrated, for various values of , and the time evolution of an
(interpolated) stream function is compared with that obtained from a simple
mode truncation of the continuum equation. The time averaged vorticity moments

Breakup of land-fast sea ice in Lutzow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica, and its teleconnection to tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures
A large land-fast sea ice breakup occurred in 2016 in Lutzow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica. The breakup caused calving from the Shirase Glacier Tongue. Although similar breakups and calving have been observed in the past, the timing and magnitudes are not well-constrained. The ice's breakup latitude during 1997-2016 was analyzed to investigate the variables controlling breakup and examine correlation with local calving for a longer period. The breakup latitude in April had a persistently high correlation with sea surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Pacific, which exceeds correlations with local atmospheric variables. The years of five out of six observed calving events from the mid-20th century can correspond to those of warm SST episodes and calving-front retreat in the 1980s to warmer SST shift. Our proposed teleconnection between tropical SST and Antarctic sea ice could lead to better predictions of breakup and might impact the glacier flux for a wider region. Plain Language Summary Land-fast sea ice forms along the Antarctic coast, and it occasionally breaks up significantly. The breakup event influences the flow of glaciers, which is otherwise held back by the fast ice. The breakup of land-fast sea ice and the discharge of glaciers have significant multidecadal variability as well as interannual variability. This study explores what controls the breakup phenomena of land-fast sea ice in Antarctica and finds the linkage with tropical sea surface temperatures. We find the environmental factors which are relevant to the ice breakup, and those variables are originally driven by the teleconnection from the tropical Pacific. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution in climate science by offering a causal mechanism that explains the previously observed multidecadal variability in ice extent in this region. Our model can explain five out of the last six calving events in a major glacier connected to this bay, offering hope for future predictions of ice behavior. This will also merit the logistics to Antarctic research stations
Continuous Interaction with a Virtual Human
Attentive Speaking and Active Listening require that a Virtual Human be capable of simultaneous perception/interpretation and production of communicative behavior. A Virtual Human should be able to signal its attitude and attention while it is listening to its interaction partner, and be able to attend to its interaction partner while it is speaking – and modify its communicative behavior on-the-fly based on what it perceives from its partner. This report presents the results of a four week summer project that was part of eNTERFACE’10. The project resulted in progress on several aspects of continuous interaction such as scheduling and interrupting multimodal behavior, automatic classification of listener responses, generation of response eliciting behavior, and models for appropriate reactions to listener responses. A pilot user study was conducted with ten participants. In addition, the project yielded a number of deliverables that are released for public access
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at

A Study of Time-Dependent CP-Violating Asymmetries and Flavor Oscillations in Neutral B Decays at the Upsilon(4S)
We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in
neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data
sample consists of 29.7 recorded at the
resonance and 3.9 off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons,
which are produced in pairs at the , is fully reconstructed in
the CP decay modes , , , () and , or in flavor-eigenstate
modes involving and (). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of
its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. The proper
time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between
the decay vertices. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample
finds . The value of the asymmetry amplitude is determined from
a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of
the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged decays in the
CP-eigenstate modes. We find , demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson

Measurement of the Z/gamma* + b-jet cross section in pp collisions at 7 TeV
The production of b jets in association with a Z/gamma* boson is studied
using proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy
of 7 TeV and recorded by the CMS detector. The inclusive cross section for
Z/gamma* + b-jet production is measured in a sample corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 2.2 inverse femtobarns. The Z/gamma* + b-jet cross
section with Z/gamma* to ll (where ll = ee or mu mu) for events with the
invariant mass 60 < M(ll) < 120 GeV, at least one b jet at the hadron level
with pT > 25 GeV and abs(eta) < 2.1, and a separation between the leptons and
the jets of Delta R > 0.5 is found to be 5.84 +/- 0.08 (stat.) +/- 0.72 (syst.)
+(0.25)/-(0.55) (theory) pb. The kinematic properties of the events are also
studied and found to be in agreement with the predictions made by the MadGraph
event generator with the parton shower and the hadronisation performed by
